I’m about to follow up (on an earlier post) with a review of the movie, Star Wars – Rogue One. I have in the past mentioned that I grade movies on a 10 point scale… and been given grief that I never give a movie a 10. To help clarify my review of Rogue One… I’m preliminarily posting a guide to TexasLynn’s movie rating scale.
- The Best Movie Ever – The Holy Grail of Movies – I’ll never watch another movie other than this one ever again. (Haven’t seen it yet.)
- This was an excellent movie – One of my favorites of all time. I will watch it again and again. (Blade Runner, Braveheart)
- This was a really good movie – Often a surprise, and one I look forward to seeing again. (Monty Python’s – The Holy Grail, Looper, Groundhog Day, Mad Max – Fury Road)
- This was a good movie – But doesn’t quite get over that hump. I may eventually see it again, probably. (Ant-man, Prometheus)
- This was a “meh” movie – It was not a complete waste of my time to see it, but I probably won’t watch it again. (Star Wars: Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens, Suicide Squad, Ex Machina, Batman vs Superman) A lot of movies fall in the 5-6 range.
- This is a sub-par movie – I would just as soon have that two hours of my life back. (Star Wars: Episode III, Jurassic World, most sequels)
- This is a bad movie – I’m mad at somebody, the producer for making it, the theater for showing it… (Star Wars Episodes I & II, Independence Day)
- This is a really bad movie – I’m not only mad, I want my money back (This is the End) (I’m pretty good a avoiding here and below)
- This is a really, really bad movie – I’m mad, I want my money back, and I want to be reimbursed for my time. (The Never Ending Story, Highlander II)
- This movie is not only bad, it is a stain on and harm to society. The producers/directors/actors should be punished; preferably by being prohibited from every working in the film industry again. (Most stuff produced by Michael Moore and Al Gore)

So… no review of WHERE TO INVADE NEXT?
Shucks.
I especially enjoy how half of your scale starts with “I’m mad.” This is a credible Johnson scale.

This is an interesting scale. As I’ve gotten older, I sway closer and closer to a worth it/questionable/not worth it scale.
I could easily name 50 films which deserve to be in the top 10 of all time… So it’s easier not to rank.
It also helps handle weird scenarios which crop up… For instance: Arrival is clearly the best film I saw last year. How can I reconcile this with the fact that Rogue One came out, and demands many things based on cultural cachet? Easier to say both are worth it and leave it there.
>> So… no review of WHERE TO INVADE NEXT?
Indirectly yes… see “1. Most stuff produced by Michael Moore”. Actually hadn’t heard of that one; had to Google it.
>> I especially enjoy how half of your scale starts with “I’m mad.” This is a credible Johnson scale.
True… but understand that this is the bottom half of the scale and I’ve generally done enough research not to show up to the theater in the first place. If I’m sitting in a theater watching one of these movies, the process has already failed… usually involving Rob (mutual friend).
>> This is an interesting scale. As I’ve gotten older, I sway closer and closer to a worth it/questionable/not worth it scale.
A very valid option. My scale would just be a subcategory of this (plus one).
Worth It = 7-10
Questionable = 6
Not Worth It = 5
I’m Mad = 1-4
>> I could easily name 50 films which deserve to be in the top 10 of all time… So it’s easier not to rank.
Absolutely… All I have to do is go to my BR/DVD collection which I’ve whittled down over the years. Maybe I’ll post a list of top movies… 8’s and 9s… and let you guys dissect them.
It rarely happens, but sometimes a movie will slide a notch on my scale over time.
Three Examples…
Groundhog Day was originally a seven but when I watched it again, and thought about the existential subtleties… I bumped it up to an eight.
Star Wars – The Force Awakens was originally a seven, but when I really looked at the regurgitated plot, I bumped it down to a six.
Highlander was an eight, but when I actually saw the sequel (in a theater) it was so bad it sucked two points off the original. It has since (after years) regained a seven status.
>> It also helps handle weird scenarios which crop up…
Being totally intellectually honest and without bias… I don’t have those scenarios. 🙂
