James Heft, a white student was recently denied entrance to a prominent university; though his grades and entrance exams were better than some minorities who were admitted purportedly because of affirmative action. The injustice towards the young white man enrages him so; that he killed a university official and the son of the dean of admissions and his fiance.
There were no leads in the murders until the young man posted a lengthy “manifesto” describing his unfair treatment by the university and its administration. In his writing he vowed to continue to kill those university administrators and their families until they admitted he was wrongfully rejected.
The manifesto covers other topics that clearly define the young man as a conservative. Mr. Heft mentioned Fox News, Rush Limbaugh, Denis Prager, and a host of other conservative pundits and commentators whom he admires. Fox News, conservative talk show host Sean Hannity received a package from the man containing a DVD and a University Emblem with bullet holes.
While a massive man hunt is underway; Christian leader Franklin Graham penned an open letter identifying with the young mans “hurt and pain”. He also promised the help of prominent conservatives in the California community. Graham said he personally knew these men and assured Heft they would “gladly receive you” if you stop the killing and turn yourself in.
On the internet, Heft has awakened conservatives to the injustice they face in the form of affirmative action. Groups of conservatives don’t hide their disdain for the University and the injustice it has meted out over the years. Heft’s manifesto is being read more and more every day and has found agreement and praise by right-wing blogs and social media commenters. There is even a Facebook page set up to defend him.
Admittedly a few (very few) conservative leaders have stepped forward to denounce the support of the alleged murderer of three people (so far).
President Obama will soon hold a press conference; but the White House has already released a statement blaming talk radio and Fox News of inciting such hatred. The White House believes that surely public pressure can finally be brought to bear to shut these programs down in the interest of public safety if not fairness.
Of course, the media frenzy in reporting this tragedy and the details around it have completely dominated the legitimate media airwaves for days.
We can only hope…
